What is the difference between the Spec Series, Custom Builds, Component Vans, and Service & Upgrades?
Nirvana offers several pathways because not every traveler needs the same kind of vehicle or build experience. The Spec Series is our collection of proven, Sprinter-based adventure platforms, developed from years of custom-build experience and personalized through curated materials, finishes, and upgrade packages. Custom Builds begin with a dedicated design process and are developed around a specific person, use case, vehicle, and set of priorities. Component Vans use proven modular interior kits, components, and systems to create flexible builds around the way you want to use the van. Service & Upgrades supports existing vans with repairs, improvements, system work, and individual upgrades within the areas we install and support.
How do I know which build pathway is right for me?
The right path depends on how much design flexibility you want and how you expect the van to support your life. If one of our proven layouts fits the way you travel, the Spec Series is usually the clearest path. If your needs call for a one-of-one layout, a different chassis, or a more involved design process, a Custom Build may be the better fit. If adaptability and modularity are the priority, a Component Van may make the most sense. If you already own a van and want to improve, repair, or upgrade it, Service & Upgrades is the place to start.
How much does a van conversion cost?
Conversion cost varies widely based on the build pathway, systems, materials, equipment, and level of customization. As a broad planning range, build-outs can run from approximately $50,000 to $200,000-plus. That range refers to the conversion itself and does not include the cost of the vehicle. Once we understand the path you are considering and what you want the van to do, we can narrow the range much more meaningfully.
Do you offer financing?
Nirvana does not currently offer financing directly. We are always looking for thoughtful ways to make the build process easier and continue to explore financing options and partnerships that could be a good fit for the people we work with.
What happens at delivery?
Delivery is designed to make sure you leave comfortable and confident using your van. We walk through the major systems, controls, features, and maintenance considerations with you. Each Nirvana build is also delivered with a vehicle-specific user manual that documents the systems and equipment in the van, explains how key features are used, provides practical guidance for maintenance, seasonal use, and winterization, and includes QR codes or direct links to relevant manufacturer owner manuals.
Does your support end when I drive away?
No. We design and document our vans with long-term support in mind. Build records, system information, and the vehicle-specific user manual create a foundation that helps us support the van after delivery, whether the need is a question, service, maintenance, a repair, or a future upgrade. Handing over the keys is a milestone, not the end of the relationship.
How do I get started?
Start with our inquiry form and tell us a little about how you want to travel, the vehicle you have or are considering, your timing, and what you are hoping to create or improve. We will help identify the right pathway and the next useful step rather than forcing every project into the same process.
What is the Nirvana Spec Series?
The Spec Series is our collection of fully developed adventure platforms created from years of custom-build experience. Each model uses a proven layout and systems package, then gives you meaningful ways to personalize materials, finishes, colors, and available upgrades. It is designed for people who want the thoughtfulness and craftsmanship of a high-end build without beginning from a blank page.
What chassis is the Spec Series built on?
The Spec Series is built exclusively on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. The lineup includes both 144-inch and 170-inch wheelbase platforms, with different layouts designed around different travel styles, group sizes, and interior priorities.
Are Spec Series vans custom?
Spec vans are personalized rather than fully custom. The core layout, engineering, and major systems have already been developed and refined. You then make selections from curated materials, colors, finishes, and available upgrade packages so the van can feel like your own while preserving the clarity and reliability of a proven platform.
Can I change the layout of a Spec Series model?
Not within the standard Spec Series offering. The defining layout and system architecture of each model are intentionally kept intact so we can preserve the benefits of a proven platform. Limited changes may sometimes be possible within reason and may require additional design fees. If you want more substantial layout changes, the Custom Build pathway is the better fit. We can also use a Spec Series layout as the starting point for a Custom Build and then develop it around your specific needs.
Are Spec Series vans four-season capable?
Yes. The Spec Series is designed around four-season travel, with integrated heating, on-demand hot water, electrical, plumbing, ventilation, air conditioning, insulation, and interior systems chosen to support real use across changing conditions. Exact equipment and features vary by model and selected options.
Which Spec model is right for me?
The lineup is designed around different ways of traveling rather than different levels of quality. Some models prioritize compact simplicity, some add greater interior comfort or an interior shower, and the 170-inch platforms open up additional living, storage, and family-oriented layouts. The model pages are the best place to compare those differences, and we can help you narrow the choice based on how you travel.
How long does a Spec Series build take?
A Spec Series build is generally about 10 to 12 weeks once the vehicle enters production. Timing can vary based on scheduling, vehicle availability, selected options, and special-order components.
Can I add upgrades to a Spec Series van?
Yes. The Spec Series includes curated upgrade packages for areas such as exterior capability, cargo, technology, long-haul travel, and comfort and convenience. Those packages are designed to provide value and efficiency when selected as part of the original build. Upgrades can also be added later, either individually or as part of a future service visit, but post-build pricing will be different from the bundled package pricing available during the original build.
What makes a Nirvana Custom Build different from the Spec Series?
A Custom Build begins with a dedicated design phase instead of a predefined platform. We work through your travel style, routines, gear, family needs, work requirements, layout preferences, and priorities, then develop a one-of-one design around them. The freedom is greater, and the design process is more involved before production begins.
What vehicle platforms can you build custom vans on?
Custom Builds are not limited to the Sprinter. We can develop custom conversions on Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, Ford Transits, Ram ProMasters, and other more unique one-off vehicles when the platform and project are a good fit for our capabilities and process.
Do I need to know exactly what I want before contacting you?
No. A major purpose of the custom design process is to turn your goals, habits, gear, preferences, and travel plans into a coherent vehicle. You do not need to arrive with a finished floor plan. It is more useful to understand how you want the van to support your life and what matters most to you.
What does the Custom Build design process include?
During the design phase, we develop the visual and functional direction of the van with you. That typically includes a detailed 3D rendering and two-dimensional illustrations that are intended to be very close to the final design. These are design documents rather than production engineering documents. Once the project has been approved and moves into the build phase, we develop the engineering and installation documentation our team needs to execute the vehicle, including the relevant system planning, installation references, and production details.
Can a Custom Build still be modular?
Absolutely. Custom does not have to mean fixed or highly built-in. If modularity, removable components, changing cargo needs, or multi-use space are important, those priorities can be designed into the vehicle from the beginning.
Can a Custom Build begin with an idea from a Spec or Component-style layout?
Yes. A Custom Build can begin with an idea, layout direction, or modular approach that you already know you like. Once it enters the Custom pathway, however, it goes through the dedicated design process so the vehicle can be developed around your specific priorities rather than remaining within the standard Spec or Component offering.
How long does a Custom Build take?
The production portion of a Custom Build is generally about 12 to 14 weeks once the vehicle enters the shop. The design phase happens before production and varies based on the complexity of the project, the number of decisions involved, and how quickly the design is developed and approved.
How much does a Custom Build cost?
Custom Builds generally range from approximately $120,000 to $200,000-plus for the conversion, depending on the vehicle, layout, materials, systems, exterior equipment, and complexity of the project. Vehicle cost is separate.
What is a Component Van?
A Component Van is a modular build assembled from proven interior kits, systems, storage solutions, seating, cabinetry, electrical and plumbing components, and exterior equipment. Instead of beginning with a custom rendering and ground-up design phase, we help you choose compatible products and integrate them into a cohesive vehicle around the way you plan to use it.
Are Component Vans partial builds?
Not in the sense of being unfinished. A Component Van can be a complete adventure vehicle, but you are not required to install every possible system at once. You can choose the components that make sense for your needs now and, because the platform is modular, add or change compatible elements later as the way you use the van evolves.
What chassis can be used for a Component Van?
Compatibility depends on the interior kit and components selected. Adventure Wagon is a common interior system we work with, but no single kit is available for every chassis or configuration. We review the vehicle and desired component package together before defining the build path.
Why choose a Component Van instead of a Spec or Custom Build?
Component Vans are a strong fit when adaptability and modularity matter most. They work especially well for people who want the van to shift between camping, gear hauling, family use, everyday transportation, work, or seasonal activities without committing to a fully fixed interior or a full custom design process.
Can I choose the electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, seating, and exterior components?
Yes, within the products and systems that are compatible with the vehicle and that we install and support. Part of the Component process is helping assemble a combination that works well together rather than simply collecting individual products. Depending on the system and the modular platform, you may also choose to add compatible elements later yourself or return to Nirvana for future additions.
Do Component Vans include custom renderings and a design phase?
No. Component Vans are intentionally based on existing interior kits and proven components rather than a custom rendering and ground-up design process. That is part of what keeps the pathway straightforward and modular. If the project requires a one-off layout, custom cabinetry, or a design developed specifically around your needs, the Custom Build pathway is more appropriate.
How long does a Component Van build take?
A Component Van is generally about 8 to 12 weeks once it enters production. Timing depends on the selected kit, component availability, integrations, exterior work, and overall scope.
Do you service vans that Nirvana did not build?
Yes. We work on vans built by other companies as well as owner-built vehicles. Nearly all Service & Upgrades requests are reviewed individually because we need to understand the existing build, the requested work, and whether the project is a good fit for the systems and services we support.
Can you upgrade a van after it has already been built?
Yes. Existing vans can often be improved with new electrical equipment, charging systems, plumbing work, heating and hot water, air conditioning and ventilation, exterior accessories, storage solutions, technology, comfort improvements, and other changes. The feasibility and scope depend on the existing build and how accessible the relevant systems are.
Can you upgrade vans you did not build?
Yes. We regularly evaluate upgrade work on vehicles built elsewhere. Because we did not create the original installation or documentation, we review those projects on a case-by-case basis so we can determine what is there, how it was installed, and whether there is a clear and responsible path forward.
What types of service and upgrade work do you take on?
We focus on the systems, products, and types of work that we already install and support. That can include electrical systems, charging systems, batteries, plumbing, heating and on-demand hot water, air conditioning and ventilation, exterior accessories, lighting, connectivity, storage, suspension-related upgrades, and other improvements that fit our capabilities.
Do you service every type of van system or component?
No. We stay within the areas we know, install, and support rather than trying to service every system found in every RV or camper van. For example, we do not service black-tank systems and we do not install or service propane systems. If a request falls outside our scope, we will be clear about that rather than taking on work we are not equipped to support properly.
How is Service & Upgrades work priced?
Service & Upgrades labor is billed hourly at our current shop rate of $175 per hour. Materials and parts are additional. Because existing vans and upgrade projects can vary significantly, we review the requested work before scheduling and provide as much clarity as possible around the anticipated scope.
What information should I send with a service or upgrade request?
The more context we have, the better. Useful information includes the year, make, model, chassis, and wheelbase of the vehicle; who built it; the age of the van and relevant system; a description of the requested work or known issue; photos; equipment brands and model numbers; and any original diagrams, invoices, manuals, or build documentation you may have. Good information upfront helps us determine whether the project is a fit before we schedule shop time.
Can you diagnose problems?
We generally do not offer open-ended diagnostic troubleshooting as a standalone service. Unknown problems can require significant, unpredictable labor, especially on vehicles we did not build. We are best positioned to take on a repair when the issue or affected system is reasonably defined and falls within the products and systems we install and support. We may perform assessment as part of an accepted repair scope, but we review those situations individually before scheduling work.
Do you take on every service or upgrade request?
No. Existing van builds vary enormously in design, workmanship, documentation, access, and installed equipment. We review service and upgrade requests case by case and take on work where we believe we can provide a clear, responsible solution within our areas of expertise.
